Bollywood horror movies have some quintessential aspects – like the scream queens. There’s no horror movie in the world that doesn’t have a woman screaming and either asking for help or helping someone else. Bollywood horror movies of the seventies, eighties, and nineties had scream queens like Preeti Sapru, Aarti Surendranath and even Beena. In the nineties, we had Bipasha Basu and Urmila Matondkar topping the line of the scream queens.
Speak to a trade analyst and even they won’t be able to answer a simple question: Why did the top actors not do a horror movie, even when some of them debuted in one? Madhuri Dixit did some interesting movies in her career, like 100 Days, a murder mystery, Deewana Mujhsa Nahin, a movie about a stalker and then probably her most famous off-center movie, Anjaam.
Raveena Tandon, surprisingly, hasn’t done any horror movies, apart from Aks. Neelam hasn’t done any well-known movies in this genre. On the other hand, Sridevi carved a niche for herself with movies like Nagina, Mr. India, Chandramukhi and others. Urmila Matondkar acted in several horror movies, including Bhoot, Naina and the house-horror Kaun.
It was only with Jism that Bipasha Basu made it okay for big-names to get into the horror genres. And that trend vaped out, until Shraddha Kapoor made her horror movie debut with Stree. Since then, several big names have signed up for horror movies. So, here’s a list of those who could be the next scream queens from Bollywood:
Shraddha Kapoor is now an integral part of Stree, one of Bollywood’s first horror franchises. She plays a witch who’s hunting a witch – not really a role for a scream-queen. But knowing Bollywood, Shraddha will have some ‘scream quotient’ in the upcoming Stree 2
Jhanvi Kapoor is an interesting proposition. Just a few years back, a debuting actor wouldn’t even look at a horror movie script. Jhanvi has signed up for not one but two such projects. One is the horror-comedy Roohi Afza and the other is the anthology Netflix Original movie Ghost Stories. The trailer for Ghost Stories is out and features Jhanvi as a nurse taking care of an elderly woman (Surekha Sikri). In Roohi Afza, the male lead is Rajkummar Rao, who is already a horror alum with movies like Ragini MMS and Stree.
Kiara Advani is taking up some interesting projects as well. She’s all set to act in two horror movies, Laxxmi Bomb and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. In the former, she’s paired with Akshay Kumar. In Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, she pairs with Karthik Aryan. Kiara was also part of Lust Stories, but isn’t part of Ghost Stories.
There’s a rumor going around that Katrina Kaif will soon make her horror movie debut with Phonebooth. The rumours say that Gurmeet Singh, the director of the web series Inside Edge and Mirzapur.
