Honey I Shrunk The Kids Becomes Tent Pole for Disney

Honey I Shrunk the Kids is the next eighties guilty pleasure that’s all set to return. Disney’s working on reboot of then scifi movie. This time, the title’s simple – Shrunk. Joe Johnston, the director of the original movie is in talks with Disney to revive the franchise.  Todd Rosenburg is writing the script.

The first movie in the series, Honey I Shrunk the Kids released in 1989,  Since then, the franchise has had two sequels – Honey, I Blew Up The Kid and a third, straight to video movie, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves in 1997.  The franchise stars Rick Moranis, Matt Frewer, Marcia Strassman, Kristine Sutherland, and others. In the current avatar, Josh Gad will play Szalinski’s son, a scientist who shrinks his children, just like his father did many years ago.

The original movie was a critical and commercial success.  It is one of the many movies the boomer generation in India says is a much watch. The CGI for the older movies has aged well as well. Interestingly, the movie’s home was Disney’s new pet project, Disney+.  The suits over at Disney decided to give it a big-screen launch. Arguably, the CGI of the original movie still stands strong.

So, HISTK becomes the latest classic franchise to get a reboot and a sequel. For the past two years, we see so many of the classic franchises coming back to life. Blumhouse is bringing back so many of those, like The Invisible Man and Halloween and Fantasy Island. Even The Grudge is coming back. The trailer for that horror movie looks promising enough to buy a ticket. Then again, creators are looking to bring back SAW as either tv series or a horror movie.  You’ll see that many of the most anticipated horror movies in 2020 are sequels or reboots.

All in all, a good time to be a horror movies fan.
