Nagraj is one of the most influential superhero characters in India. Back in the eighties and nineties, we had only a handful of comic books. One was Amar Chitra Katha’s Tinkle and another was Pran Syndication series of comics. Along with that came Raj Comics with their brand of Indian superheroes. Now, there’s news that one of their most famous characters, Nagraj, will come to the big screen and Ranveer Singh is in negotiations to play the lead role.
The Quint reports this, but also says that there’s no contract set out at the moment. Sanjay Gupta made the announcement in a conversation with PTI. He said that this will be the first live-action adaptation of an Indian superhero. The Raj Comics Multiverse is big enough to become a franchise. It has a cult following and the Social Media page of the fan group has a big following.
It’s not like Raj Comics hasn’t dabbled with movies about their superheroes earlier. They have a YouTube channel that regularly show their concept videos, like this one:
The backstory is a very big affair and the movie will be a big-budget movie when it gets made. Nagaraj means the King of Snakes. The titular character is a prince who gains supernatural powers. Basically, he uses snakes as weapons. There’s a lot to process, the Wikipedia page is almost fifty scrolls.
And its not like Ranveer Singh is the first name to have cropped up. Two years ago, rumors bandied around Tiger Shroff’s name as the one who’d play Nagraj. They also made a short film, Adamkhor, based on one of their other properties:
