Katrina Kaif will soon hit the screens as a superhero – that’s what director Ali Abbas Zafar has confirmed. Rumors about this movie started off in March. However, with the lockdown and everything, the news petered out. However, latest reports confirm that Katrina Kaif will play a superhero in what obviously is now a female-centric movie.

With this movie, Katrina Kaif becomes one of the few Bollywood actors who have donned a cape for the movies post the 1980s and she is in august company. Before her, Hrithik Roshan has played Krrish. Tiger Shroff has played a superhero as well. The superhero genre is yearning for a good addition, and I sincerely hope Katrina and Ali offer that.

What’s we don’t know is whether this movie is part of the superhero trilogy that Ali announce earlier, on the lines of Mr. India, one of India’s most loved sci-fi movies. That announcement created a lot of bad blood, with everyone, from Shekhar Kapur to Sonam Kapoor expressing displeasure about someone trying to remake Mr. India without the collaboration of anyone and everyone part of the original movie.  Shekhar Kapur slammed it, and you can read about it here. Sonam Kapoor slammed it as well, and you can read that article here.

Watch Mr. India song here:

The Bollywood sci-fi movie Mr. India hit theaters in 1987 and is one of the most loved sci-fi movies in India. Shekhar Kapur has not made another Bollywood movie since then. However, rumors of a Mr. India have swirled for a long time, beginning with the Mr. India ride becoming a part of Imagicaa and Mogambo becoming a character in one of Imagicaa’s other shows. There were rumors that Salman Khan was interested in the Mr. India project. Photos of him and brother Arbaaz Khan at Imagicaa, enjoying the Mr. India ride added fuel to those rumors. But all that watered down a few years ago.

Indian audiences haven’t yet warmed to the concept of a remake. Most of the remakes have bombed at the box office. In fact, all this while, only Farhan Akthar’s Don has become successful, and that too because he went ahead and created a twist. That movie had a sequel and fans are still begging for a Don 3.

There were many a Bollywood sci-fi movie hitting theaters back in the fifties, sixties and so forth, but they somehow slowed down in the eighties, when Hollywood fare became available to Indian audiences via VHS. With globalisation, very few Indian sci-fi movies hit the screens. It was only after the popularity of the South film Robot that sci-fi had a resurrection in Bollywood.
