Mardaani 2 Goes The Psychological Thriller Way

Mardaani was a pretty good film. It tackled a relevant, current issue and had Rani Mukerji break the shackles of a stereotype Bollywood heroine. The first film won acclaimed but didn’t make good money at the box office. Mardaani 2, though, seems to be a complete rework of the concept The Mardaani 2 trailer hints at the film being a true-crime thriller, with the protagonist looking for a serial rapist/killer.

With this, Mardaani 2 has joined the league of the suspense mystery thriller movies. The first film was about a mainstream, but an equally blood-curdling crime. It was about the trafficking of women and under-age girls. Rani Mukerji’s character was given excellent foil by Tahir Raj Bhasin.

I am liking the over-all vibe, but the initial spoiler hinting at the antagonist being underage is somewhat of a killjoy. Rani Mukerji shows hints for excellence with this one. It’d be good if she owns the character and creates a franchise of her own. She’ll become only the third female actor to have a franchise, after Vidya Balan, who has the Kahaani franchise in her name.  Sridevi had one in her name as well, Nagina.  Gopi Puthran has written and directed the film.  Then again, this film is good news for fans of suspense mystery thriller movies. We don’t have many films of this genre anyway.

YRF has had some difficult times for a while and it makes sense for them to venture into the crime/thriller zone. Indian audiences have been rejecting romantic dramas, which was YRF’s forte. YRF has tried making psychological thrillers earlier, with Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan. While that film didn’t work, Shah Rukh Khan’s performance won acclaim. YRF is doing the right thing with this film though. It hasn’t signed up a bigger than life actor so that the film’s story is eclipsed and it becomes just another film for a big name actor.

Mardaani 2 releases December 13.
