The New Mutants Influenced By Classic Horror Movies

I know I say this several times, but then, The New Mutants is another most anticipated movie coming from Hollywood. The movie has a lot riding on it already. It should be a great beginning for the X Men franchise. The fate of the movie will also decide how other mainstream franchises implement horror concepts in their script and screenplay.

Josh Boone, the guy behind the movie is very open about what the movie is going to be. In fact, during a recent media interaction, he went ahead and told us the three movies that influenced The New Mutants.  Retro horror fans will be happy to read the names:

  1. Dream Warriors
  2. The Shining
  3. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

Boone spoke about his love for all the aforementioned movies but spread some of the love for Dream Warriors. Dreams Warriors is the third movie in The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.  In the movie, Freddy Krueger is once again on the rampage and wants to kill Nancy and all the children who killed him in the initial Hollywood horror movie.

The kids are in a psychiatric hospital, and the world thinks that they are either crazy or suicidal. The story’s about how Nancy bandies up support for the cause to kill Krueger and does away with him. Not forever though, because there was a sequel, The Dream Master, right next year.

The choices are interesting though and make The New Mutants all the more important. Dream Warriors is an out and out slasher Hollywood horror movie, with a lot of deaths. The Shining is the creepiest slow-burn horror movies to hit the screen. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is actually a comedy-drama – apart from that last scene –  movie about the inmates in a mental institution. I hope you too can see the thread here – young people incarcerated and fighting a great terror.
